VMworld2014|14.10.|[VAPP2635-SPO] Best practices for managing your VMware environment with HP integrations

I thought the session would be focused on HP tools and practices to integrate HP servers and storage into vSphere environments for managing, monitoring and installation. But this session was mainly focused on OneView integration into vCenter.

HP OneView for VMware vCenter

  • Plug-in to Web Client is available for OneView integration
  • Networking
    • graphical display of network cabling – which is very nice!
    • you can see graphs of throughput and performance, if plug-ins are installed
    • includes checks to look for VLANs configured on host-level also configured at hardware
    • it also recommends actions that you can apply easily. e.g.: networks are not configured on host-level, the plug-in can run the necessary commands on the hosts (doing maintenance mode of course)
  • Storage
    • graphical display of storage connections – which is also very nice!
here you can see e.g. replicated 3PAR volumes easily
    • you can create, expand, delete datastores directly from this plug-in
    • includes FW update. Works with OneView.
  • Licensing (more information about licensing and download you can finde here)
    • the module for storage management can be used for free. The license is enabled by downloading the software.
    • the server module is licensed with OneView and HP Insight Control
    • HP 3PAR StoreServ Recovery Manager for VMware functionality is licensed separately

HP OneView for other vSphere components

  • Integration in vCOPs
    • Dashboard, including HP server, storage, networking, …
  • Integration in Log Insight
    • provides search strings to allocate HP specific errors
    • provides script to provide data from HP sources (iLO, OA, …)

Storage Policy Based Management

Storage Policy Based Management (SPBM) is on top of vVol, vSAN and vCloud Air. So these products use the same policy framework. Beneath policy-driven control plane there is the data plane.

Overview of vVol

  • virtual disks are native array volumes
  • array based data services (replication, snapshot, dedup, QoS, DR, …) are used instead of  software based services like VMware Snapshot, vSphere Replication, …
  • configuration is based on Storage Policy-Based Management
  • support for FC, iSCSI, NFS protocols
  • currently there are more than 29 partners developing products that uses vVol
  • HP (3PAR), NetApp, Dell will offer products at GA of vVol

vVol Architecture

  • vSphere <-> (control path) Vendor Provider (VASA) <-> (control path) Array
  • array presents a virtual datastore (it is not a vmfs-volume!)
  • define Storage Policies
  • data path is separated from control path

NEW: vSphere API for IO Filtering

This could be a next medium-sized thing! With IO Filter (VAIO: vSphere API for IO) it will be possible to plug software into the IO path. So online services like dedup, compression, caching, replication, encryption will be possible at this level. These filters will be installed in user space, so in case of problems it will just affect configured VMs instead of the whole host.

NexentaConnect for vSAN

With NexentaConnect you can use vSAN as storage for an integrated filer that supports these features:

  • file storage
  • NFS, SMB
  • user data
  • departmental data
  • ISO files
  • inline compression
  • performance and health monitoring
  • folder and volume level snapshots
  • integrated in vCenter GUI
  • global cache
  • snapshot of folder – integrated in windows GUI

I did’t had a look at the solution yet, but its good to know there is an option when such thing is needed.

Think automation as a pyramid

Top: scripts
Middle: Orchestration
Bottom: Policies

vRealize Automation (vRA)

  • Automation Tech.: policy bases, built-in
  • good for
    • self-service
    • service lifecycle management

vRealize Orchestrator (vRO)

  • Automation Tech.: Workflow

Autmation tipps:

  • measure
    • what did you want to get, what did you get
  • you should automate with standardization
  • simplify
    • don’t try to automate something that is not to automate … or to expensive to
  • build your automation recursively
  • test a lot!
  • Document
    • vRO can to this very well

Case Study

  • examples out of this:
    • uses vRA to add disks to VM and uses vRO to format these disks. Both within the create process of the VM

vRealize – new naming

  • New name: vRealize, instead of vCenter
    • vRealize Operations Management Suite, …

News in vCenter Operations Manager 6

  • NEW: scale out architecture
  • different node types
    • master node
only one; keep users, inventory service
    • data node
      UI access, can be replicated
    • remote collector
can collect data from more than one vCenter
    • optional: master replica
  • all nodes uses the same code, just configured with different roles
  • a one-node-installation is also possible
  • options to deploy: vApp, Linux-, or Windows-Installation
    • but you can’t mix it within a deployment
  • HA feature
    • using replicated data nodes
  • there will be a rebalance-feature, so you can rebalance data after adding a new data node
  • UI of vCenter and vCOPs get merged
  • Solutions can be added (sounds like you do it today with Horizon View)
    • pre-built dashbord, alerts, reports, problem definition
    • added via Management Pack available from VMware Solution Exchange
  • Upgrade from 5.x
    • install version 6 and migrate data
  • Sizing vRealize Operations Manager depends on such a lot of criteria, so it will be hard to predict
  • set threshold to monitor disk space used by vCOPs

Adobe is talking about there installation

  • standardize -> automate
  • uses app. 42 vCenters reporting to a vCOPs
  • issues with 5.x
    • scale up is limited
    • scaling up is dependent on IOs
    • difficulties to handle multitenant environment
    • no HA feature
    • to get alerts to other system, you need to use vCO
    • just one collector
  • new outbound alert settings – to get the right alert to the right people

  • there is the plan to combine vCOPs for View and vCOPs into one solution, but not in this version …
